Armored warfare, or tank warfare, is the use of armored vehicles in combat. The primary use of armored warfare is to penetrate enemy defensive positions and take out the enemy's armored vehicles. Armored warfare developed as technology advanced, which improved amored vehicles ability to maneuver, survive combat, and support infantry. Armored warfare can be traced back to the first chariots, but this article specifically covers its 1917+ aspect.

Prior to World War I, calvary performed what is now the role of tanks; manoeuvring and breaking through enemy infantry to attack lines of communications and enemy supply lines in the rear. Due to the introduction of machine guns and semi-automatic infantry guns calvary became outdated.
